Improvements for the Third Generation Plasma Wakefield Experiment E-164 at Slac
The E-164 experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center is the third in a series investigating Plasma Wakefield Acceleration where the wake is driven by electron bunches. A collaboration between SLAC, UCLA and USC, E-164 has up to 2x10 electrons at 28.5GeV in 100 micron long bunches. These bunches enter a 30cm long Lithium plasma with density of 6x10 electrons/cm, where the transfer of e...
متن کاملAcceleration and Focusing of Electrons and Positrons Using a 30 GeV Drive Beam
A series of plasma wakefield acceleration (PWFA) experiments are being conducted with a 30 GeV drive beam from the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). These experiments continue to address the application of meter-scale plasmas to focus and accelerate electrons and positrons in the context of future applications to high-energy accelerators.
متن کاملParticle Beam Waist Location in Plasma Wakefield Acceleration
The role of beam waist location in interactions between a plasma and a particle beam is not yet fully understood. Nonlinear effects with the plasma make an analysis of such interactions difficult. Five simulations are presented in this report, with the waist location of a beam of ultra-relativistic electrons propagating through one meter of self-ionized lithium plasma. The simulation parameters...
متن کاملPlasma Dark Current in Self-ionized Plasma Wake Field
Evidence of particle trapping has been observed in a beam driven Plasma Wake Field Accelerator (PWFA) experiment, E164X, conducted at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center by a collaboration which includes USC, UCLA and SLAC. Such trapping produces plasma dark current when the wakefield amplitude is above a threshold value and may place a limit on the maximum acceleration gradient in a PWFA. T...

One of the interesting Laser-Plasma phenomena, when the laser power is high and ultra intense, is the generation of large amplitude plasma waves (Wakefield) and electron acceleration. An intense electromagnetic laser pulse can create plasma oscillations through the action of the nonlinear pondermotive force. electrons trapped in the wake can be accelerated to high energies, more than 1 TW. Of t...
